During US prohibition, many Canadian manufacturers and mobsters ran rum into the US to feed the insatiable appetite for quality spirits.
Illegal alcohol was not so hard to find during prohibition. Although some regions had a strict enforcement, there was still a desire to enjoy a social night out which included consuming drinks and other social activities. There was much manufacturing going on in the United States but to meet the demand, much rum was brought in from Canada. It fed into a strong economic advantage for Canadians and American organized crime groups.
